The Audemars Piguet: Royal Oak 1972 watch, was developed at the start of the 1970s, when Audemars Piguet was in desperate financial conditions and near collapse. Managing director Georges Golay knew something drastic had to be done, so he called renowned Swiss/Italian designer Gerald Genta and told him he needed a design for a groundbreaking steel watch by the next morning. While most designers would have balked at the notion, Genta delivered what he considered to be his life’s crowning design achievement: The Royal Oak.

The minimalist styled print is detailed, yet simple. The watch is characterized by an octagon shaped bezel. It also is secured by 8 hexagonal screws which gives the watch a distinct look that was often criticized upon its release. A slim watch by modern standards, at just 7mm, it also features a case diameter of 33mm. This lithographic print comes from a limited edition of 500 and is pressed in Long Island City, New York on 100lb FSC certified archival cover stock using the best Van Sons Elite soy based inks.
